Review: Tinker Bell

Tinker Bell released Oct 28, 2008 direct to DVD.

OK, I have to confess... I love Disney. All the political crap aside, they make great movies. The animated ones are my favorites.

I also have to say...I don't get into movies. Even great movies, based on great books I love, I just don't get into.

I love this movie! I love this movie more than my daughter does. I bought this movie for her because she loves Peter Pan. She alternates pretending to be Tinker Bell and a pirate. I am now trying to get her to let me decorate her room as Pixie Hollow.

The movie tells the story of how Tinker Bell, and all fairies, come to being. Then Tinker Bell tries to become something she's not, ends up causing a disaster, and then fixes the situation by embracing her true self. The story is simple. It's suppose to be...it's for young kids. What blew me away was the characterization of the other fairies. All of them are multi dimensional. All of them are strong enough to have a movie of their own. In fact, Disney, I want to watch their movies. Make them!

The other awesome thing is the visual. The pictures (or frames or whatever you call them) are unbelievable. In fact I want a picture book of this movie (hint, hint, Christmas present). Everything in this world is related to nature. The fairy homes are flowers, the doors are pumpkin tops, the fans are oak pods. All the tiny details are fabulous.

The other reason I love this movie is how it gets kids interested in nature. It is one of those movies along the lines of The Wind in the Willows that lets kids, even grown up ones, run wild with imagination.

Not only do I have a bedroom planned but I am also thinking birthday party. We could gather up leaves, sticks, some gourds and the kids could make their own fairy houses. We could even incorporate a nature walk to gather the items into the party. There is a website where you can build your own faerie at www.disney.go.com/fairies. Each child could design their own and even dress up like them. I am already anticipating the next movie Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure due out next fall.
