I am sorry you guys have been sick. That does suck! Great idea on making a themed gift for kids. Do you ever check out zakkalife.blogspot.com? She has a tutorial on a princess wand (along with other fun ideas.) For my potholders, I just use a potholder I already have for a template and add about a quarter of an inch for seam allowance. I use cotton batting (like for quilts) for the insulation although there is stuff called insulbright made esp. to be heat resistant. I haven't used it yet. I just put the fabric sqares right side together with batting on top and stitch until there is about a 3 inch gap. I cut thread and then turn the fabric so the outside is out and the batting and inside of fabric are in. I add a loop and sew the gap closed. Then do decorative stiched to quilt the batting in place and to make it pretty. I am not a pro at this. It is all a part of my making friends with my sewing machine campaign for the new year!
