The Magic of Halloween

There are two different Halloweens. There is the commercialized Chucky version with bags upon bags of processed sugar candy. Where you watch bloody thrillers and get a stomach ache from too much candy. This one revels in blood and gore. What terrible things the human mind can think up to inflict upon another! Like the Chainsaw Massacres and Saw 2.

But I choose Halloween to be a celebration of harvests, a remembrance of the past, a time to reflect upon loved ones legacy and to think about what legacy I will leave. I find it a perfect time, much better than the New Years, to do some inward reflecting. What do I want to leave behind? What do I want people to recall of me? Joy, love, laughter, creativity, knowledge? Halloween is when I align what my values are to what I am doing and where I am going. We all choose our lives. Yes, some things happen to us that we don't choose. Death of a parent at a young age, a car accident, cancer. But we can choose how we live. We can choose a life raising animals, helping children, crafting useful and beautiful items. Reflect upon what you truly want, who you truly want to be and choose that path. Don't let your steps wander on the well travelled road if it doesn't fit you.

The Halloween season to me is all about magic. The leaves turn glorious colors magically hidden all year behind the green. The frost sparkles with a magic fire.

Tonight is October 1st. The start not of fall, but of the Halloween season. The weather has finally turned here. There's a chill in the air tonight. I'm going to cuddle down on the couch with a blanket and watch my favorite movie, Practical Magic. I'm going to eat butternut squash roasted with cinnamon and butter and I'm going to think about what I need to realign this year.

I love this aspect of Halloween that you talked about, the remembering of loved ones who've passed, and the inward look at ourselves and the legacy we want to leave behind. Definitely a season worth celebrating!
